HISTORY of the L-89 Corvette
Regular Production Option (RPO) L89 was an option that first debuted in the 1967 Corvette. It used the competition cylinder heads from the L88 racecar and combined them with the L71 427 Turbo Jet engine. The aluminum heads saved considerable weight which meant a number of L89's ended up on the drag strip. Only 16 Corvettes in 1967 were ordered with the L89 option and a total of 624 in 1968.
In it's final year as an engine option, only 390 Corvettes were built in 1969 with the potent L89 aluminum head Tri-Power engine option, adding an additional cost of $394.95 to the sticker price on top of the L71 engine option price of $437.10
