Australian Street Machine Drag Challenge, Day 4 Return to Swan Hill

What a day of racing! The penultimate session of Street Machine Drag Challenge was one for the record books literally. Perfect conditions in the early morning would set up the Swan Hill strip for some serious results. With all the big guns lining up straight away to capitalize on the cooler temps, big number after big number was turned and the competition heated up rapidly. Lorenzo Gullotto had been gaining momentum and rhythm all week and came out firing with a 7.65@180mph to set the tone. This would be enough to jump into third overall, having started outside the top 5 on the first day. Harry Haig was next to drop a serious number, running a record 7.50@174mph to claim the fastest ever quarter-mile pass on Drag Challenge but only for a few short hours. While enough to solidify his standing atop Outlaw Blown, Harrys efforts were overshadowed by Frank Marchese late in the afternoon. Frank had been fighting gremlins in his Ford Fairmont, FAIRXW, but came through in the late stages of the day and put down an absolutely ridiculous 7.36@192mph! Not only obliterating the events records for the quickest and fastest pass, but also jumping up into first place overall, holding a 0.02sec lead over Harry. With all the movement above him in the leaderboards, Adam Rogash tried desperately to put in a huge result that we all know he is well-capable of, but a 7.78@179mph would be enough to keep him in contention at fourth place. In fifth place with a 7.91@171mph, John Ricca in the RB30-powered Holden VL Commodore BT1 looks to be the fastest six-cylinder in the pack. A close competition will roll through into the final day for the Outlaw Aspirated class also, with hot rod builder and racer Daniel Cassar keeping a 0.3sec lead in his tough black 32 coupe over Mark Busschers Holden HQ One Tonner Ute. Alon Vella continues his dominance in Radial Aspirated, with the wheel standing Ford Capri running a seriously impressive 8.69@152mph. The all-motor leader has a four-second buffer heading into tomorrow, so itll be a matter of keeping it tidy and safe to take home the tinware in the class. Tired and weary, and with many classes in close contention, event director Scotty Taylor dropped the surprise that a 400km (250mi) road section would be the icing on the cake for Day Four. Heading back to Calder Park Raceway would be a tough afternoon drive for many. Bumpy, single-lane highway roads would be the final test for entrants before getting a sleep-in and late afternoon start on the final day. Racing will start at 3pm and run into the evening for Day Five of Drag Challenge, and with the promise of cooler temps it will be anyones guess who will emerge victorious after five grueling days of racing, wrenching, and road tripping.
