2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: 4 Features We Like and 3 We Dont

We first saw the new Hyundai Sonata last year at its reveal in the new Hyundai Design Studio in Soul, South Korea. We were impressed by its lavish design and technology for a mainstream midsize sedan. Since then, weve had a chance to drive it , and earlier this year at the Chicago auto show we saw its first green iteration. The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid arrives with styling similar to the gas version, but its a little more powerful and can deliver up to 54 mpg, according to the EPA. Scroll down to find out our favorite and not-so-favorite features on the newest electrified sedan from Hyundai. --> We Like: MPG Ratings The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is available in three different trimsBlue, SEL, and Limited. All three deliver remarkable fuel economy, but the Blue is the one that delivers the best numbers50/54/52 mpg city/highway/combined, according to the EPA. Hyundai says the smaller wheels and tires, as well as less equipment (no spare tire here) help the Blue achieve those numbers. The SEL and Limited also boast decent ratings, each delivering 45/51/47 mpg. We Dont Like: Brakes Hybrid cars are developed with regenerative brakes to help recycle used energy back into the battery. In some hybrids, the regenerative braking is almost imperceptible and feels like the brakes in a normal car; in others, the braking can be too grabby. Unfortunately, the Sonata Hybrids brakes are too aggressive. Even when you apply bare pressure to the brake pedal, the brakes bite too hard too quickly, and it takes time to adjust to them. We Like: Interior Space Although some hybrids compromise on interior space (you have to find space to put the battery, after all), the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid doesnt. There are almost no differences between the hybrid and the gas model in both its passenger space and cargo volume. Legroom and headroom are the same for both cars, and cargo volume changes only slightly16.3 cubic feet for the gas variant, and 16.0 for the hybrid. Whereas the previous-generation hybrids battery was located under the cargo floor, Hyundai moved the battery to under the seats in the current model, allowing for almost the same cargo volume as the gas model. We Dont Like: Parking Sensors Almost every time I came to a stoplight, the Sonatas front parking sensor would go off as if an object was approaching the car, even when the car was completely stopped and no other cars were around. This was pretty annoying. We Like: Solar Roof A solar panel on the roof isnt a new idea ( Toyota offers it on the Prius Prime in Japan and Europe), its not common to see them. All Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited models come with the solar roof, and Hyundai says it should give the car about 2 additional miles of driving on a sunny day. Although Im not a fan of the way the solar panels look, they hid themselves well in our Nocturne Black Sonata. We Dont Like: Electric Vehicle Warning Sound In order to alert pedestrians and cyclists that a hybrid or EV is near them, the NHTSA made it a requirement in the U.S. that electrified vehicles emit warning sounds when traveling at 18 mph or less. In the Sonata Hybrids case, the sound is quite loud. We Like: Driving Dynamics Like we said during our First Drive, the Sonata Hybrid is a comfortable cruiser. I wouldnt describe it as sporty, but it has decent punch for a midsize sedan. With 192 combined horsepower, the Sonata Hybrid is zippy, and in Sport mode the steering response is sharper and the six-speed automatic holds gears a bit longer. Hyundai made the powertrain quieter, and thats noticeable whether you drive on the freeway or side streets. We Like: Un-Hybrid Design One of the things we like the most about the current Hyundai Sonata is its striking design , and the hybrid follows suit. Hyundai made very few changes to the electrified variant, adding a unique grille, exclusive wheels, a rear spoiler, and a different front fascia. The wheels are so different, youll be able to spot them easily, but youd need a magnifying glass to see most of the other changes. We like the Sonatas plush look, and were happy to see the hybrid retained that styling. The post 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: 4 Features We Like and 3 We Dont appeared first on MotorTrend .
